Lee Co. Sheriff's Office makes multiple burglary arrests

LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) – Several people including two brothers were arrested following a burglary in Smiths Station.  

On Tuesday, Feb. 2 the Lee County Deputies responded to a complaint call in the 200 block of Lee Road 222 in Smiths Station, AL. According to the caller, they saw two white males and a white female enter into nearby duplex when deputies arrived. 

The three suspects ran out the back door into a wooded area.  Lee County Deputies and investigators setup a perimeter and saturated the neighborhood and began a grid search. 

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office K-9 handlers and their partners were deployed to assist in the manhunt.  As a result of an intensive searching, Lee County Deputies apprehended all three suspects from the woods and surrounding areas of the neighborhood. 

The investigation revealed that the three suspects had gained access into one of the duplexes through the attic area and then crawled to an adjoining unit from which they stole around $1,300.00 in property, including assorted jewelry, DVD player, audio recorder, BB gun, prescription medication, collectible plates, sun glasses and other miscellaneous items.  All of the items were recovered and returned to the owner. 

On Thursday, Feb. 4, two brothers, Lyndell Chalcraft, 40, of Smiths Station and Shawn Wayne Chalcraft, 30, of Phenix City were both charged with burglary in the third-degree, theft of property in the third-degree, criminal trespassing in the third-degree and attempting to elude a police officer. They are now being held in the Lee County Detention Facility on a $75,000 bond. 

During this burglary investigation, 23-year-old Paula Witherington, was also arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Witherington was not involved in the burglary case. She is being held in the Lee County Detention Facility on a $3,000 bond.

The female offender was identified as 24-year-old Casey Renee Baker. She received warrants for burglary in the third-degree and theft of property in the third-degree have been issued for her arrest. 

Baker was able to make bond on the initial charges of Criminal Trespassing in the Third Degree and Attempting to Elude a Police Officer prior to Burglary and Theft charges being issued.
