COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The Columbus Consolidated Government and the Development Authority of Columbus will employ a prescribed fire on about 300 acres in Muscogee Technology Park.

The prescribed burning takes place Wednesday, Feb. 10 beginning around 11 a.m.

This is part of habitat land management activities required by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in conjunction with the 1999 Land Exchange with Fort Benning.

The dates of additional fires will be determined by the appropriate weather conditions including wind direction and humidity; the window for the event will continue through March 1.

While this activity will achieve many desired objectives, it nevertheless produces smoke that may cause reduced visibility and other potential issues. A burn plan will be implemented that sates the atmospheric and environmental conditions necessary, clearly defines the boundaries of the area to be burned and provides details of specific precautionary measures that must be implemented prior to the burn.

To further ensure the safety and effectiveness of the land management plan, the prescribed burn will be carried out by the Georgia Forestry Commission with assistance from Fox Land & Water.

Contacts will continue be alerted to these events as soon as the conditions for the fire are favorable.
