On Sunday, Feb. 7 at approximately 9:30 a.m., Auburn Police responded to a report of a disturbance in the 1200 block of Amy Court.

When officers arrived they discovered the door of an apartment forced open and determined the 34-year-old female resident and her two juvenile children had been forced to leave with someone.

An acquaintance of the family, 23-year-old Jwaun J. Strum of Auburn, was immediately developed as a suspect.  A description of the suspect and his vehicle was broadcast to other agencies in the area.

A Chamber’s County Deputy located the vehicle and performed a traffic stop that that resulted in Strum being taken into custody; the victim and her juvenile children were located in the vehicle unharmed.

Auburn Police were able to take Strum into custody with the assistance of the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Valley and Lanett Police Departments.

While being detained in an interview room at the Auburn Police Division, Strum attempted to escape by accessing a crawl space in the ceiling.

Strum was extracted from the ceiling, detained and subsequently transported to the Lee County Detention Center.

He is charged with three counts of first degree kidnapping, first degree burglary, first degree rape, first degree domestic violence, third degree escape, third degree criminal mischief and violation of a protection from abuse order.

Strum is not eligible for bond.
