OPD arrest suspect, searching for second in burglary

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -

On Monday, Feb. 8 at approximately 9 a.m., the Opelika Police Department responded to a burglary and theft in progress in the 1700 block of 1st Avenue.

A witness noticed suspicious behavior when they saw two males carrying a television from the house and placing it into a car.

The witness followed the suspects and saw them drive to an open business down the street.

Officers responded and met with the witness, the homeowner, and the business owner. They were able to determine that the males had broken into the house and stole the television. They then sold the television at the business.

The television was recovered and the suspects were identified.

One of the suspects was contacted by the police and positively identified. Colin Luke Smitherman, 19, of Auburn was arrested and charged with third degree burglary and fourth degree theft of property.

Smitherman was booked into the Lee County Jail.

The other suspect has been identified but has not been apprehended as of yet.
