OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) – Opelika police have confirmed that one person was shot and flown out on a helicopter air ambulance near North Antioch Circle on Thursday.

Police said that around 12:15 p.m. CST, they received a call of shots fired around the 500 block of North Antioch Circle.

A 30-year-old man was found lying in the yard of 518 North Antioch Circle with gunshot wounds. He was flown out to Midtown Medical Center in Columbus, where his condition is unknown.

Police discovered the scene of the shooting was at in front another building. A white van was found with several bullet holes in it. The victim had been in the van.

Opelika Police have given an "all clear" to Carver Primary School, who were briefly taking a heightened level of security following the shooting.

"This was due to the school being in close proximity to the neighborhood of the shooting, and that initially there was a potential suspect in the area," the OPD press release said. "Once it was determined that the area was safe, and there was no threat to the school, the school was notified they could resume normal activities."

An investigation into the shooting is underway in an attempt to determine what actually happened. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Opelika Police Department Investigative Services Division at (334)-705-5220 or the Secret Witness Hotline at (334)-745-7556.
