In less than a week the Boys and Girls Club of the Chattahoochee Valley will name its 2016 Youth of the Year.

As we continue our look at the seven young finalists for this award, we introduce you to 15-year-old Lakayla Carter.

Carter is a sophomore at Jordan High school and self-confident is a label she wears proudly. She wants kids everywhere to know it doesn't matter where you come from its where you're going that matters.

"My brand is to be determined, to stay on track, don't let something that happened in the past determine what's going to happen in the future," Lakayla said.

Lakayla plays on Jordan’s basketball and volleyball teams. She's also a part of the Junior ROTC Raiders and drill team.  She's been coming to the Boys and Girls Club for the last five years.

"It has helped me with my grades and without the Boys and Girls Club I would not have had some of the opportunities I have now," Lakayla says.

The club has also helped LaKayla chart a path for her future. She's got big plans for her life.

"I want to be an Army psychologist and I want to go into the Army after college to major in psychology. I like to hear people's opinions and if they have problems I like to talk about it with them and just like to be there for people."

Those are just some of the reasons LaKayla believes she deserves to be Youth of the Year.

"I feel like I can be a role model for some, they can say like she wasn't all that when she was little but she's determined to be more than what people expect of her,” Lakayla said.
