COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - One Columbus teenager is making a return to the list of finalists for Youth of the Year, an honor from the Boys & Girls Club of the Chattahoochee Valley. Austin Leathers, a runner-up from 2015, hopes to win the award this time in his final year in high school.

Leathers has been involved with Boys & Girls Club for 10 years off and on, and now is a leader to kids there, whether it's with homework or teaching them something new.  It also gives the Jordan High School senior a chance to play his favorite sport - basketball.

“I've done wrestling, baseball, basketball, football, I do everything ROTC,” Leathers said. "I became commander of drill team and color guard. When we went to practice, I was in charge of everyone there."

Boys & Girls Club has helped Austin come out of his shell, the product of a single parent household.

He plans to attend Tuskegee University, eventually becoming an aerospace engineer. Austin is thankful to the staff here for leading him on the right path.

"Boys and Girls Club is like another family to me, even though some staff over the year changes, you become close to them, like the people before,” Leathers said.

Be sure to tune in every day to WTVM news at 5:30 all next week, where we will feature more teen finalists for this award.
