COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - In a new report released by the Columbus Consolidated Government and the Columbus Police Department on Monday, crime statistics have decreased to their lowest numbers in a decade.

The report says there were 12,392 crimes reported in 2015; those numbers are lower than the 14,413 crimes reported 2014.

"The 2015 overall crime reports are at the lowest levels in over 10 years," the report states.

The seven tracked crime categories of Part-One Crimes are recorded in the Uniform Crime Report, or UCR, published by the FBI. UCR is a nationwide, cooperative statistical effort of over 18,000 jurisdictions, which voluntarily reports data on crimes brought to its attention.

In 2015, as compared to 2014, Columbus saw a decrease in:

  • Homicide (down 23 percent),
  • Aggravated Assault (down 2 percent),
  • Burglary (down 31 percent),
  • Larceny (down 9 percent) and
  • Motor Vehicle Theft (down 10 percent)

Despite those decreases, there was an increase in reported rape, up to 31 percent, and robbery, up 6 percent.

The list of reported numbers since 2006 can be seen below.
