COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – The Columbus Department of Fire and EMS has confirmed the cause of the fire located at 6900 Bullet Blvd. was due to unattended food on the stove.

On Tuesday, Feb. 16 around 7:20 p.m. fire officials responded to the report of an apartment fire. Upon arrival they found a two-story wood framed four unit apartment building involved in a fire. The fire was then extinguished without any reported injuries.

It originated in a second floor apartment and it caused extensive damage to the structure. The blaze caused an estimated $50,000 in damage and $12,000 to content, according to the Columbus Department of Fire and EMS Facebook page.

The unit directly below the fire unit sustained heavy water damage, and now Red Cross is assisting the displaced families.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration estimates that 37 percent of residential fires occur as a result of cooking.
