Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year: Finalist Tia Nick

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - An award-winning artist from Carver High School is among the seven finalists for Youth of the Year, an award being given out Thursday night by the Boys and Girls Club of the Chattahoochee Valley.

Teenager Tia Nick says she had behavior problems when she was younger and didn't want to be around many people at all.

However, the Boys & Girls Club changed all that for her.

The now-junior at Carver High School started coming to these clubs in the Chattahoochee Valley when she was 12 years old.

"Ever since then, I've just blossomed from being that depressed little me,” Nick said, flashing a smile.

That smile is because the Boys & Girls Club has given her new friends, positive role models, and kept her out of trouble, with things to do - like drawing.

Nick, 17, is an artist, a hobby that she's been recognized for.

"I won an (art) award at CSU and it was put in the Columbus Museum,” Nick told us.

The Youth of the Year finalist, who people describe as funny and good with kids, is specific about her future plans, choosing her career based on her grandmother's dying wish.

"I'm supposed to be going to Georgia Military College and start training to be a nurse,” Nick added

The Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year winner will be announced at a special dinner Thursday night, where our own Jason Dennis will emcee.
