WTVM Editorial 2/19/16: Kanye West's version of debt

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Sometimes, you just have to laugh.

The ultra-successful rapper Kanye West recently took to Twitter to say he is "$53 million in debt." In an internet flash, nearly everyone asked, how could that be?

One concerned fan even started a GoFundMe page for Kanye, hoping to raise that $53 million through internet contributions.

The fan wrote: "Sure, Kanye can buy furs and houses for his family, but without our help the true genius of Kanye West can't be realized."

Of course Kanye is not really in debt, not the kind of debt us mere mortals might face by, say, spending too much on our credit cards.

No, Kanye West's debt is really the amount he has invested in his fashion-related empire, because, as Kanye likes to remind the public, he is the hottest artist since Picasso and Andy Warhol.

The funny, well sad thing, is that 600 people have donated more than $5,000 to Kanye's cause as of a few days ago.

Who are these people that would donate to a rapper worth millions now maybe someday billions of dollars?

One thing is certain: they aren't as smart as Kanye West.

Just by claiming to be in debt, Kanye gets priceless amounts of free publicity for his new album and his fashion house. He'll never need anyone's charity and he knows it. But it keeps him front and center.

Maybe Kanye is the genius he thinks he is - after all!
