COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The National Civil War Naval Museum held a Black History Month presentation for students in the city Friday morning.

The Lift Every Voice presentation took place at the Wynnton Arts Academy and Fort Middle School.

Attendees were able to explore and celebrate African Americans who served during the Civil War.

“We are taking a first person interpreter; Mr. Donald Sweeper, who is portraying Robert Smalls- a slave from the Civil War period who stole the USS Planter and took it to Union Forces." Holly Wait said.

Attendees were able to hear the story of Congressman Robert Smalls who freed himself, his crew and their families from slavery in 1862.
