School closures, shelters open for severe weather

The following schools will be closed or delayed due to the inclement weather: 


Auburn City School District  

To ensure the safety of its students, all after school programs and activities on Tuesday, Feb. 23 will end no later than 6 p.m. The Varsity Football Parent Meeting originally scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 23 has been moved to Tuesday, March 8 at 6 p.m. in the new AHS Gym. Auburn Parks & Recreation facilities will close Tuesday at 5 p.m. due to the severe weather threat. All leagues and programs are canceled for the day.


Chambers County School District
Due to the potential for tornadoes and dangerous winds arriving in Chambers County overnight, all school start times will be delayed by two hours in the morning on Wednesday, Feb. 24.  If your child rides the bus, the bus will pick your child up approximately two hours later than normal in the morning. This is for all schools in Chambers County School District - Career Tech, Fairfax, Five Points, Eastside, Huguley, JP Powell, LaFayette Lanier, LaFayette High, Shawmut, WF Burns, and Valley High.  


Chattahoochee County Schools 
All Chattahoochee County Schools will have a two hour delayed start on Wednesday. Faculty and staff are to report at 9 a.m.


Lanett City Schools 
There will be a school delay for Lanett City Schools. Buses will run at 10 a.m., and school will start at 10:30 a.m. 


Marion County School District
The superintendent for the Marion County School District says they are delaying school by two hours on Wednesday. Classes will start at 10 a.m. and buses will run two hours late. Breakfast will not be served. 


Muscogee County School District 
All Muscogee County schools will start at their NORMAL times until further notice. 


Randolph County School District 
Randolph County Schools will also be delayed by two hours in the morning on Wednesday, Feb. 24. 


Schley County Schools 
The Schley County School District will delay for two hours - teachers should report in by 9:30 a.m. and students should arrive by 10 a.m. EST. 


Southland Academy (Americus, GA) 
Students are asked to report to school at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Faculty and staff should report to duty or faculty meeting at 9:30 a.m. Middle and upper school students should report to their third period classroom. 


St. Anne Pacelli Catholic School (Columbus, GA) 
There will be a two hour delay in the start of school on Wednesday, Feb. 24. Teachers should report to school at 9 a.m. Middle and high school students will begin school at 10 a.m. Students in preschool through fifth grade will start school at 10:15 a.m.

Taylor County Schools (Butler, GA) 
All Taylor County Schools will be closed for students, faculty, and staff.



Additionally, the following buildings will open as shelters Tuesday night: 

Auburn University Draughon Library
231 Mell Street in Auburn, AL  

While this shelter is specifically for the university students and staff, they have expressed that citizens who come will not be turned away.


Auburn University Green Hall (Vet School) 
1500 Wire Road in Auburn, AL 

While this shelter is specifically for university student and staff, they have expressed that citizens who come will not be turned away.


Chattahoochee County Recreation Center
127 Industrial Park Road in Cusseta, GA

If there are any tornado watches or warnings, the shelter will open.


Southern Union State Community College 
1701 Lafayette Parkway in Opelika, AL 

Business & Technology building (new building across from the Winn Dixie shopping center on West Point Parkway) has a community shelter, which will be open to the public when a Tornado WATCH is issued. It will close once the watch expires. There are NO provisions at this site, therefore citizens will need to bring their own comfort items (chair, blanket, food, water, child care items, etc). The phone number for the SUSCC Campus Police/Overnight Security is 334-328-9392. During the daytime that number is 334-395-2211.


Smiths Station Government Center
2336 Lee Road 430 in Smiths Station, AL 

Upon the announcement of a Tornado Watch, the Smiths Station Government Center will open as a shelter.
