Opelika police investigates shooting of 2 people on Saturday

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - The Opelika Police Department is investigating a shooting that left two people injured over the weekend. 

On Feb. 28 at around 10 p.m. CST, OPD officers responded to the 100 block of Stowe Avenue in reference to several gunshots being fired. 

Upon arrival, officers began investigating the incident. 

While their investigation proceeded, a 29-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man arrived at East Alabama Medical Center suffering from gunshot wounds. 

The female victim was admitted into the ICU Unit, and the male was taken to surgery. Both are expected to recover from their wounds. 

The victims are brother and sister. Investigators have developed a person of interest and are continuing to follow up on all leads.

There were also two other shootings in the Auburn and Opelika area over the weekend that left two dead. 

Opelika Police are also investigating the death of Jacob Austin Smith, who was found dead on Raintree Street. 

The investigation is still ongoing and a person of interest has been developed. At this time, investigators are following up on several solid leads. Further developments will be reported as they occur.
