COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A space shuttle is looking to make its final landing here in the Chattahoochee Valley!

Residents of Muscogee and Harris counties may have spotted a NASA space shuttle on Monday around town as it was driven to the Columbus Airport for storage.

Last year, NASA gave Columbus State University the quarter-scale space shuttle test article and the 48-foot tall specimen. The shuttle will be stored at the airport as the space science center develops plans and raises funds to create a place for it.

The space science center's director calls the shuttle an irreplaceable part of our nation's heritage.

“This is a fantastic honor to have this artifact on display. Because it's not just the orbiter you see behind me it's also the external tank and the solid rocket boosters. That means it’s the full stack, we have all of those components,” Shawn Cruzen said, Director of CSU Coca-Cola Space Science Center.

The shuttle features a 19.5-foot wingspan, and two 37-foot-long solid rocket boosters.
