COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Colon cancer, which affects both men and women, is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S.

Dr. Paula Walker King from Columbus State University stopped by News Leader 9 Morning and says early screening can prevent deaths.

Risks factors include:

-family history

-inflammatory bowel disease

-adenomatous polyposis

It is recommended to get a regular colonoscopy at age 50, but earlier if you have a family history.

You can reduce your risk for colon cancer by:

-not smoking

-increasing physical activity

-avoiding obesity/obsessive weight gain

-not drinking excessive amounts of alcohol
