Columbus church hosts forum on diabetes awareness

A local church is doing its part to inform people in the valley about a common illness, diabetes.

First African Baptist Church hosted a diabetes forum on Saturday, March 12.

The event was conducted by the Diabetes Education for Columbus Regional and the Extension Service.

Coordinators say diabetes is the number one health related issue concerning African Americans in the Muscogee County area.

"All of that has to do with education, that's why we have the UGA extension, we have Live Healthy Columbus, and we're partnered with faith based community, to make sure that regardless of where we are, that living healthy is not just a spiritual thing, but it is a Columbus initiative," said Pastor Roderick Green of First African Baptist Church.

Dozens were in attendance for the event.
