Smart, Dawgs open spring practice with fresh start for 2016 season

As the seasons change, it’s also a season of change for the Georgia Bulldogs.

They’ve got a new head coach in Kirby Smart, a brand new coaching staff, and also a new beginning Between the Hedges.

“We’re not trying to use any preconceived notions on anybody. We want to observe for ourselves and give them a clean slate,” Smart said.

The players also know things will be different with the new staff.

“Coach Smart is a defensive guy so he’s very energetic,” junior running back Sony Michel said. “He’s probably going to be hyping up the defense a little bit and it’s going to create some competition on the practice field so it’s very exciting.”

“No matter what, I think the message has been set that we’re going to work hard and get some tempo out of it so we’re just excited to get to it,” sophomore tight end Jeb Blazevich said.

One of the new additions to the coaching staff is Dell McGee. The former Carver Coach is already making an impact on the running backs.

“He has a great track record with running backs at Georgia Southern,” Michel said. “I think they had one of the top five rushing attacks in the country and he knows what he’s doing.”

Quarterbacks are the biggest question mark in Athens this year. Despite five-star freshman Jacob Eason’s arrival, we’ll have to wait and see who’s the top Dawg.

“There’s no timetable for the quarterbacks,” Smart said. “We’re going to evaluate them each day. We’re going to encourage them to worry about each day getting better, not worry about the result of each day.”

Smart gave us a status update on Nick Chubb. While he didn’t give a timetable for his return, he said Chubb might be ahead of schedule for his recovery.
