COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A Columbus High School sophomore and contestant for the Miss Georgia Outstanding Teen competition is helping local children gain more access to books and reading.

Miss Crystal River Valley Outstanding Teen Olivia Gauthier collected nearly 400 books in a recent book drive.

This week she distributed the books to local charities including Open Door Community House, Girls Inc... and the Muscogee County Friends of Libraries.

As part of her platform “Readers Are Leaders” as Miss Crystal River Valley Outstanding Teen, Olivia started the book drive earlier this year with the goal of getting books into the hands of as many children as possible.

“My goal is to help foster a love for reading and to help young children especially to understand that reading not only helps them do better in school but better in life,” Olivia says.

More than 200 books were collected at Kimberly Gore Salon in Columbus, with other drop off locations at 2nd & Charles Book Store, and American Family Insurance.

Donations are still being accepted at Kimberly Gore Salon through the end of April with the books being distributed to area children.

Olivia will compete in the Miss Georgia Outstanding Teen Competition, which will be held in Columbus in June. She is also the daughter of WTVM's Barbara Gauthier.
