COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Not all kids in the Chattahoochee Valley are able to hit the beach for spring break, so one local nonprofit brought the beach to them!

The United Way hosted an alternative spring break for area children on Wednesday, providing a beach themed mini carnival through its open door program.

Kids enjoyed playing volleyball and playing in the sand along with other beach activities such as the limbo and beach treats like popcorn and snow cones.

“Bringing in activities, creating activities for the kids is very important for them to stimulate them having fun having a great time, a break from school, relaxation from the studies and also have a great time with the staff,” Marlon Sharp said, the Director of Open Door Community House.

Organizers also say the event was a chance for young volunteers to build new skills and network with other young leaders.
