COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The controversial "thaw the freeze” proposal is one step closer to being added to the November ballot for Fountain City residents to vote on.

The proposal to put the measure on the ballot passed the Georgia State Senate by a 52-2 vote on Thursday.

Now the proposal is heading to the Governor Nathan Deal's desk for approval. The plan would not eliminate the property tax freeze, but would grandfather in anyone who is currently under that freeze, so they could remain under it as long as they own a home that is frozen in value.

Columbus voters would decide on measure during the November elections.
