One Columbus man got an unexpected s-s-surprise when cleaning out his Shop-Vac vacuum on Sunday morning.

Mel Chaffee had let a neighbor borrow his Shop-Vac last year, and the neighbor apparently never cleaned it out.

When Chaffee tried to move it recently, he discovered it was quite heavy. When he dumped out the contents of the bag, he found not one but two grey rat snakes.

Instead of killing them, he put them in a bucket with a little bit of peat mulch. The male and female snakes had also apparently started to mate.

Chaffee says he kept them around because snakes are also good for keeping rodents away.

“Of course I always try to catch them in a way to where you don’t aggravate the snake or hurt the snake or injure the snake, you have to be really careful,” Chaffee said.

This is the fourth snake in about two weeks that Chafee says he has caught. He says construction at nearby Sears Pond is causing the snakes to head his way.
