Cougars rip AUM to end losing streak

Columbus State snapped a three-game losing streak with a 12-4 victory over Auburn Montgomery on Wednesday at Ragsdale Field.

CSU scored two runs in the first, third and sixth to go along with a six-run outburst in the fourth. It was the 13th time this year that the Cougars scored over 10 runs in a game this season.

"It was great to see us swinging the bat tonight after last weekend," said head coach Greg Appleton. "We needed to rebound and that is exactly what we did tonight against a very good AUM team."

That six run inning gave the Cougars (23-10) some needed breathing room. The first four CSU hitters reached base in the inning, including a RBI single by Jackson Oliver. Ryan Ihle drove home a run on a fielder's choice before back-to-back RBI singles by Mike McClellan and Christian Miller put the Cougars ahead 8-2.

Matt Nettles made it a 9-2 game on a sacrifice fly before Lake Hart capped off the inning's scoring with a sharp double down the left field line that chased home Miller. It was Hart’s second hit of the inning after leading things off in the sixth with a single.

Luke Porter improved to 3-0, allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings of work while tying a season-high with six strikeouts. Sean Muller, Kyle Peals and Kolton Ingram combined to keep the Warhawks (26-9) scoreless over the final four innings.

Ihle was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs for the Cougars while McClellan was 2-for-4 with two runs and three runs driven in. Oliver (2-for-6), Miller (2-for-4) and Hart (2-for-3) all had multi-hit days.

Columbus State will now gear up for a Peach Belt Conference series this weekend against Georgia Southwestern. The series is slated to begin on Friday at 5 pm ET. in Americus.
