COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

One local police department is looking for a few good men or women to bolster its ranks.

The Columbus Police Department says it is looking for as many qualified candidates as it can find to fill around 70 positions within the department.

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED.

Major Wanna Barker-Wright with the Columbus Police Department says they are looking at improving incentives for officers, including starting pay, to attract applicants.

She also spoke about the workload for officers with the dozens of vacancies.

“Well of course it has increased, but we are working with it,” Major Barker-Wright said.

Major Barker-Wright says she attributes military personnel on the force going back to their families, and officers leaving for other professions or departments within the city as the reason for the vacancies.
