COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A woman is asking for the public's help after she says her dog was taken during a car theft in Columbus on Monday.
Erika Schroeder says her 2015 Chevrolet Malibu was stolen on Monday evening from the Shell gas station, located at 4499 Warm Springs Rd. in Columbus around 6 p.m.
Schroeder says her husband, Kohl McLeod, stopped by the gas station and left their 8-year-old Chihuahua, Chi Chi, in the car with the air conditioner on while he stopped inside.
While McLeod was inside, two black males allegedly stole her car, and drove away with Chi Chi inside of the car.
After police were called, the car's OnStar system was enabled, and the car was located at Parkway Place Apartments, located at 1110 Farr Road. Despite the car being recovered, the items inside - including McLeod's military uniforms and Chi Chi - were gone.
Schroeder said a police report was filed, and police tried to help her husband locate their dog, but they had no success.
She says that Chi Chi is not micro-chipped and was not wearing her collar. She also said the 8-year-old rescue dog is skittish around new people and other dogs, and has a pin in one of her hind legs from a surgery a few years ago.
Schroeder, who has only been in Columbus for 11 months, says she doesn't care about the other items in the car - she just wants her dog back.
The couple is offering a $2,500 reward for the safe return of Chi Chi. If you know or have seen Chi Chi, you can reach Schroeder at (706)-763-0685.
