Child abuse prevention, Ma Rainey, and victims' rights recognized by Columbus Council

The month of April has been proclaimed Child Abuse Prevention Month by the Columbus City Council.

The council adopted that proclamation at Tuesday night’s meeting as part of the national observance of the month.  

During April, communities are encouraged to share strategies and activities to help prevent child abuse.

The council also passed a proclamation recognizing National Crime Victims’ Rights Week from April 10 through 16t The week is set aside each year to honor crime victims and promote victims’ rights.

It was also a busy night of proclamations and resolutions for Columbus councilors. They paid tribute to Columbus Native and Blues Singer Gertrude Pritchett, also known as "Ma Rainey." The "Mad About Ma Rainey Blues Festival" will be held in Uptown Columbus on April 30.

Other proclamations included Fair Housing Month and the council passed a resolution recognizing Georgia Cities Week, which will be held April 17 through 23.
