COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - For the third year, children with special needs gathered for an annual field trip known as Fort Benning Field day activities.

The event was held on York field.

It has grown from just 12 kids the first year to about 1,200 kids on Friday.

Organizers of the event reached out to not just local communities but others to increase the participation in this year's event.

Bridgett Siter with Fort Benning says field day is an event that extends beyond the post.

“The youngest members of our community are the most important. They are our future. There are 6 counties involved here today. We value our partnership with them. They take care of us. They take care of Fort Benning families," Siter said.

Students from Fort Benning and local homeschoolers joined participants from Muscogee and Harris counties in Georgia and Phenix City and Russell County schools in Alabama.

They participated in events like wheelchair games, races and football.
