Marla Spence joined the News Leader 9 team in the winter of 2015 as a reporter and producer.

Marla was born in Miami, FL, and her diverse upbringing has allowed her to engage and connect with people of all ages and cultures. Marla's passion for broadcasting started at the age of 12, as a Radio Disney KidCaster.

This landed her the opportunity to cover movie premieres and concerts for the local Radio Disney station.

Marla attended Barry University in Miami Shores and graduated with a degree in Broadcast Communication. During her time at Barry University, Marla was WBRY's AM 1640’s Reporter and Community Service Coordinator. She also worked for Urban Television of South Florida as a reporter.

Marla obtained an internship with Cox Media Group Miami. After completion of her internship, Marla was awarded a position with Cox Media Group Miami where she has had the opportunity to interview several public figures and celebrities. 

Marla is a former pageant queen and titleholder for the Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss America Organization.

She had the elite privilege to hold the titles of Miss South Florida, Miss Brickell, and Miss Overtown and was graced with third runner up in the preliminary pageant to Miss Universe Jamaica.

Her commitment to pageantry has forwarded her the opportunity to obtain college scholarships while dedicating her time and service to her community. Marla is an advocate for Water Safety and Drowning Prevention, due to the tragic loss of her eldest sister.

During Marla’s time in South Florida she was an advocate for Summer Safety Splash of Miami - Dade County, and Pool Safely through the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission.
