1689: William III and Mary II are crowned joint sovereigns of Great Britain.

1881: Spelman College is founded in Atlanta, as an institute of higher education for African-American women.

1951: President Harry Truman relieves General Douglas MacArthur of overall command of U.S. forces in Korea.

1970: Ill-fated Apollo 13 is launched from Kennedy Space Center. Oxygen tanks explode two days later completely altering mission.

1975: Hank Aaron returns to Milwaukee and over two seasons hits 22 more home runs, finishing his career with 755.

1998: Cher wins Academy Award as Best Actress for her role in "Moonstruck."

2013: Comedian and actor Jonathan Winters dies in Montecito, California at age 87.
