COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Not only was Northside’s 5-4 win over Columbus in extra innings exciting, it had big region implications.

The victory also sets up a region championship game with the Blue Devils Friday at Northside.

But the game itself carried tons of drama. After the Patriots took the lead in the 9th inning on a sac fly by Chantler Valero, Columbus had a chance to tie and perhaps win the game in the bottom of the inning.

With the bases loaded and two outs, a ground ball bounced off the foot of a Blue Devil runner, leading to the third and final out of the inning and the game.

Both teams had a see-saw battle. Columbus jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Northside put two on the board in the fourth.

Columbus had a 3-2 lead after 5, but Northside put two on the board in the sixth to take the lead until Columbus tied it up at 4 in the bottom of the inning.

Whoever wins Friday’s game will win the region, and it will no doubt be just as exciting as this one. First pitch set for 5:30 p.m. at Patriots Field.
