21st Annual Celebrity Classic raises funds for cancer patients

21st annual Celebrity Classic fundraiser concludes

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The 21st Annual Celebrity Classic swung into action in Columbus on Friday morning.

Celebrities there included a handful of professional athletes, including tennis player Justine Rusk.

The Celebrity Classic was founded in 1995 to raise funds in support of vital oncology services for patients diagnosed with cancer in the Chattahoochee Valley.

Melissa Jimmerson served as guest speaker for the event. Jimmerson is a breast cancer survivor who was treated at the John B. Amos Cancer Center, which benefits from the tennis event.

"I'm determined to live a long life cancer free, and I'm also determined to share my story so other women can live their life long and cancer free too," Jimmerson said.

Jimmerson is a big tennis fan, and was courtside cheering on her sister Robyn who played in the classic.

"Everyone's who's out here playing today, they're playing for a great cause, all of our sponsors and players out here, 100 percent of the proceeds they've raised and donated to play is going to the John B Amos Cancer Center," said Special Events Officer Meredith Campbell. "We have some wonderful givers here around town – super faithful and loyal to the cancer center."

The weekend-long fundraiser concluded Monday, April 18 with an awards reception.
