COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Columbus fire officials said that a couple and their four pets are safe following a house fire on Monday morning.

The fire was at a home, located at 4819 Warm Springs Road, and crews were called to the scene at 8:36 a.m.

Two Good Samaritans passing by the home alerted the couple to the fire in their garage by beating on their front door. The couple is OK and their four dogs made it out safely.

Fire officials said the fire started in the attic space of the open-air garage in the one-story home. The fire also caused some exposure damage to a nearby apartment building.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but appears to be an accident. Fire officials also said there were no working smoke detectors inside the couple's home.

The estimated damage is $48,000 to the structure and $20,000 for the couple's belongings.

The Good Samaritans declined interviews at the scene.
