1882: English biologist and theorist Charles Darwin dies in Kent, England at age 73.

1951: General Douglas MacArthur ends a 48 year Army career when he retires from military.

1956: Actress Grace Kelly marries Prince Rainier of Monaco in a storybook wedding.

1987: The Simpsons debut as a short cartoon on The Tracey Ullman Show.

1988: Singer-songwriter, actor and politician Sonny Bono is sworn-in as mayor of Palm Springs, California.

1993: Fifty-one day FBI siege of Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas ends with massive fire that kills 81 people.

1995: Powerful truck bomb destroys Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Nineteen children are among the 168 dead.
