COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

One local group of students is showing off the power of "girl power" when it comes to robotics.

Two members of the award-winning Girls Inc. "Smart Girls" Robotics Team were recently part of a group of several students honored at the White House for their science and technology achievements.

Kayla Hamilton, 13, and Olivia Hamilton, 13, are part of a team of eight girls from different middle schools in Columbus.

This year, the team worked on a so-called "upcycling" project," teaching young girls how to upcycle old clothes and make new items out of them.

"I enjoy it all really because it’s interesting, it’s about life and different things," Kayla said.

"Every type of hobby you to do, you have to have the determination and you have to want it for yourself,” said Olivia. “If you don't then it’s pretty hard to fake it."

The robotics team has already won several awards at competitions this year.
