Columbus city teams fall on opening day of GHSA soccer playoffs

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

It turned out to be a short stay in the GHSA Class AAAAA playoffs for teams from Columbus, as all three squads lost first round matches on Tuesday night.

Region-1 champion Columbus High dropped their opening match 2-0 to Starr’s Mill in a game played at Columbus State’s Walden Soccer Complex. Jonathan Ulversoy and Sam Pompeo scored the goals for the Panthers, while Michael Lantz stopped all 11 Blue Devil shots.

Shaw’s season came to an end with a 4-3 loss to Union Grove at Kinnett Stadium. Jimmy Barrera and Esteban DeJesus scored first half goals, while Christian DeAnda notched a goal in the second half.

Northside, the third place finisher in the region, fell on the road at Northgate by a score of 3-0.
