NEW YORK (WTVM) - Live with Kelly will debut on Monday, May 16 and host Kelly Ripa will welcome a familiar face as her special guest co-host.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! host Jimmy Kimmel will appear as the special guest co-host on May 16.

On the official LIVE with Kelly and Michael Twitter account on May 4, it was announced that Empire's Jussie Smollett, Cedric the Entertainer, ABC's World News Tonight anchor David Muir and Hawaii Five-o's Daniel Day Kim would appear as guest hosts the week of May 16.

The move comes after Ripa's current co-host, NFL Hall of Famer Michael Strahan, announced that he was leaving Live to and go to his other job, ABC's Good Morning America for a full time role. The announcement was made on April 19. Ripa and Strahan co-hosted the daytime talk show together for four years.

Much has been made of the fallout of the announcement since then - Ripa said she was "blindsided" by Strahan's departure announcement - so much so, she took several days off from the show.

Upon her return to Live on April 26, she addressed the controversy and congratulated Strahan on his new job.

“This is a place that I’ve devoted myself to, not just because of you, our loyal viewers, but because of all of the producers and the crew who work on this show,” Ripa said. “We have an incredible team, we are incredibly devoted to one another. We are family. Apologies have been made and the best thing to come out of all of this, you guys, is that our parent company has assured me that ‘Live’ is a priority.”

But since then, Ripa has mentioned contract negotiations and what many people have considered snipes at Strahan, including a remark during their "headlines" segment where Ripa quipped about Strahan's two divorces

On May 3, Ripa addressed Strahan's departure again, reminding the audience in-studio and at home that "I'm still here!" and that Strahan's last day was fast approaching.

It's been announced by ABC that Strahan's last day on Live will be May 13. But despite the drama, the pair won a Daytime Emmy for "Outstanding Hosts in an Entertainment Talk Show" at the 2016 Daytime Emmy Awards.

Many people have been speculated as Ripa's next co-host when the show premiers for a new season in September 2016, including CNN's Anderson Cooper, Andy Cohen, and Ripa's husband Mark Consuelos, to name a few. All three men have filled in during Strahan's absence in the past.

The last co-host change when longtime host Regis Philbin left Live in 2011. Ripa replaced Kathie Lee Gifford in 2001.
