COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Nearly a thousand people gathered at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center Thursday night to honor Muscogee County's 2016 Teacher of the Year.
Several teachers were recognized at this year's event, but the big award of the night went to Stefan Lawrence.
Lawrence is a teacher at Carver High and a graduate of Northside High.
In his acceptance speech, he credited his own former teachers and parents for helping him get to this point, and also paid tribute to late Carver High baseball coach David Pollard.
"It means more," said Lawrence. "You max out effort every day, realizing why you teach. You teach for kids and everything else is just cherries on top. No one teaches to get awards."
The 2015 Teacher of the Year Sheryl Green gave the keynote speech.
