ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) – Seventeen Yorkshire Terriers were rescued after law enforcement officers say the dogs were living in deplorable conditions, but now they are in the process of being adopted by loving homes.
The Yorkies were rescued from a home on Taylor Road in Elmore County on Tuesday, May 3. The animals were infested with fleas and lice and their coats were matted.
After several baths and trips to the vet, the animals are feeling so much better and are slowly learning to trust humans after spending most of their life in cages.
"The outpouring was overwhelming, we had upwards of 50 applications and a few more slid in, so we had to say no more applications because we have some really good applicants on hand to adopt for these animals," said Rea Cord with the Humane Society of Elmore County.
Cord says it will take some time for the dogs to heal health wise and learn how to adapt to being a part of a family.
But she says they are on the road to a happy, healthier life.
