COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The Columbus Lady Blue Devils came up big in the shootout to get past defending state champ Starr's Mill 3-2 on Wednesday night in the GHSA Class AAAAA state semifinals at Kinnett Stadium.
Kimberly May, Madeline Goodfellow, and Caroline Spurlin all converted their PK's, while goalkeeper Samantha Runyon stopped three of four shots to lead the Lady Devils into a berth in the state finals.
Spurlin got Columbus High on the board in the 13th minute, converting a crossing pass from May to give the Lady Devils a 1-0 lead at the half.
Starr's Mill got second half goals from Riley Clark (46th minute) and Leslie Logan (66th minute) to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
A pass from May to a wide open Gigi Schorr led to a breakaway and the tying goal in the 74th minute that tied the game at 2-2 and led to the overtime.
Columbus will face McIntosh for the state title on Saturday in Macon. Kickoff is set for 5 pm ET at Mercer University's Five Star Stadium.
