COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A Georgia U.S. Senator is one of several politicians in Washington D.C. criticizing Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald over comments he made Monday comparing wait times at VA Hospitals to waits at Disney theme parks.
U.S. News and World Report, along with the Associate Press report that McDonald made the comments at a breakfast Monday morning, saying that he hoped experiences at VA hospitals would be measured by overall satisfaction, not just by how long someone waited.
"When you go to Disney, do they measure the number of hours you wait in line? Or what's important? What's important is what your satisfaction with the experience is?" McDonald said during a Christian Science Monitor breakfast on Monday.
McDonald's comments set off a political firestorm with Republicans denouncing the remarks. Georgia Senator David Perdue called the comment "offensive and shameful".
"The U.S. should hold veterans care to a higher standard," Perdue said in a written statement.
VA spokeswoman Victoria Dillon said in a statement Monday that officials know that veterans are still waiting too long for care.
