COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Nearly one out of every three people in the United States will develop shingles.
Dr. Paula Walker King stopped by News Leader 9 Morning to tell us that the risk of getting the disease increases as a person gets older.
Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash which can occur anywhere on the body, but it typically appears as a single stripe of blisters that wraps around either side of the torso.
Shingles is caused by the Varicella-Zoster virus—the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you have had chickenpox, the shingles virus is already inside you.
Symptoms of the virus include:
- Pain in the infected area
- A red rash that begins a few days after the pain
- Fluid filled blisters that break open and crust over
