COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - One local historical society in the Fountain City celebrated a major milestone on Thursday night.
Historic Columbus celebrated its 50th birthday at the Springer Opera House.
At event, several speakers such as Stephanie Meeks the president of the National Trust, George McDonald, president of the Georgia Trust and Paul Pierce, Artistic Director at the Springer Opera House gave speeches and presentations on what Historic Columbus brings to the area, and how important preservation is to historic building and landmarks.
"Historic Columbus has been around for 50 years, but we also did it here at the Springer Opera House because this is where Historic Columbus started," said Callie Hecht, director of Cultural Outreach.
The group got its start in the 1960's by saving the Springer from becoming a parking lot for the government center.
