Wager, Simpson lead CVCC past Harford

CVCC 14, Harford 11

Frank Wager had a pair home runs and Trent Simpson shut the door in relief to lead Chattahoochee Valley to a 14-11 win over the Harford Owls on Tuesday in an elimination game at the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Wager had solo homers to lead off the second and fifth innings, and added an RBI double in the third to help the Pirates take a 12-2 lead. Carson Hughes also contributed in a big way with a two-run double in the fourth, and a two-run single in the ninth.

Simpson's role in relief was key. Jordan Lee faltered after five solid innings, giving up solo homers to Luke Johnson and Colby Dean to start the sixth. Christian Vann had his own troubles in the inning, giving up three hits and six runs, including a grand slam by Johnson, his second home run of the frame. That cut the CVCC advantage to 12-10.

Simpson then came in stop the bleeding, getting Dean swinging to end the inning and holding the Owls scoreless the rest of the way.

The win insures the Pirates will be in the final four. Their next game is set for Thursday, when they will face San Jacinto (TX), the last remaining unbeaten team in the tournament, at 9:30 pm ET.
