1942: Singer-songwriter Curtis Mayfield is born in Chicago, Illinois.

1962: A chartered Air France flight crashes during takeoff at Orly Airport, killing 106 members of the Atlanta Art Association and 24 others.

1967: Journalist Anderson Cooper is born in New York City.

2010: Actress Rue McClanahan dies in New York City at age 76.

2011: Actor James Arness, 88, dies in Los Angeles, California.

2012: Queen Elizabeth celebrates 60 years as British monarch with Diamond Jubilee Celebration.
