Columbus man dies in the Gulf of Mexico after being caught in a riptide

(WTVM) – A Columbus man died on Tuesday after being caught in a riptide in the Gulf of Mexico near the Okaloosa Island Pier.

According to police, firefighters and Okaloosa EMS crews worked to try to save 36-year-old Ulysses Williams after he was pulled to shore around 6:10 p.m., but he was unconscious and not breathing.

Williams was later pronounced dead at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.

A friend says Williams, who was visiting the area from Columbus panicked after getting caught in a rip current.
