FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - Vietnam veterans gathered on Thursday at the 173rd Memorial located at the National Infantry Museum to remember the fallen.
The veterans held a ceremonial cleaning to help keep the monument in good condition.
The 173rd is an airborne infantry combat team of the United States Army, and was the first major United States Army combat ground formation deployed in Vietnam.
Kenneth Smith, president of the 173rd Brigade National Memorial Foundation, says it's a time to reflect on those that are gone in a private way.
"We get to touch the names of the fallen," Smith said. "The mothers who have lost sons and daughters it's an emotional time for them and it's a healing process."
The veterans used cloth and water to clean the monument so the names of fallen would not be damaged.
