Irondale PD: 1 dead after officer-involved shooting

JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Birmingham Thursday evening, according to Irondale Detective Michael Mangina.

This started around 5:30 p.m. in Irondale. Both Irondale and Birmingham police officers, as well as two ambulances, responded to the scene at 5th Avenue South and 31st Street. The suspect was reportedly armed, according to a press release from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).

Mangina says the officers are OK.

A witness reported hearing several shots and seeing officers with their guns drawn, standing over the man. The witness didn't know if they were Irondale or Birmingham officers who fired the shots.

A man's body is lying face down in the street. 

Special Agents with (ALEA) will take over the investigation. 

Officials have not said how this all started, but we do know the vehicle pursuit started in Irondale and ended in Birmingham.

Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls.
