(WTVM) – Auburn outfielder Anfernee Grier was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 39th selection in the 2016 MLB Draft on Thursday night, in the supplemental portion of the first round.
The Phenix City native had a big junior year for the Tigers. Grier hit .366 this season with a dozen homers and 41 RBI. He led the SEC in runs scored (56) and total bases (137), was second in homers and hits (87) and was top ten in average and stolen bases.
He was a first team All-SEC selection and is a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award, given to the nation's top college player.
Grier is the fourth former Russell County Warrior to be chosen in the first round, joining Colby Rasmus (2005), Cory Rasmus (2006), and Kasey Kiker (2006).
The MLB Draft resumes on Friday with rounds 3-10, and wraps up on Saturday with rounds 11-40.
