FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - The military's best pistol shooters will be crowned this week on Fort Benning as 57th Annual Interservice Pistol Championship kicked off on Monday.
Marksmen from the Army, Army Reserve, National Guard, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard will square off against each other.
Shooters will compete in individual and team matches with multiple pistols.
Colonel Gregory Kitchens with the Marine Corps Reserve says the pistol championship is a great way for servicemen to enhance their techniques for combat situations.
"You have to a real genuine expertise," Col Kitchens said. "That does not come from a manual. It comes from actual experience. I have long felt that there is no better thing making our soldiers, Marines, Sailors and our Airmen better at shooting than at actual competition."
The championship takes place on Phillips Range and wraps up on Friday, and the competition is open to the public for those who want to watch.
