OFD’s Kids Academy teaches fire safety in a fun way

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - There's nothing like cooling off with a water hose on a hot summer day!

More than 75 Opelika kids got the ultimate splash day during the Opelika Fire Department's Kids Academy.

The kids and firefighters played in the water hoses, ran obstacle courses, and played on a gigantic slip and slide.

The camp focuses on teaching kids lifesaving fire tips.

"We've got the smoke house behind us, kids can go in and learn how they need to get out of a fire, by getting low and feeling for the door," said Lieutenant Stephanie Durbin with the Opelika Fire Department. "We also have where they kids can  use fire extinguisher to learn how to put out a fire."

The Opelika Fire Department hosts the kids academy every summer.

The fire chief says his firefighters normally have just as much fun if not more fun than their campers.
